Arctic Ice 2011 - Sail, Steam and SatellitesThe NSIDC will shortly be publishing its report for March 2011.  I expect the report to conclude that Arctic sea ice extent for February 2011 was the 'lowest in the satellite record'.  That would mean the 'lowest ever recorded in human history', since we have abundant data on historic ice extent. There is a false argument doing the rounds of the blogs: words to the effect that we have no accurate knowledge of ice extent before the age of satellites.  This is, of course, nonsense on stilts in clown boots with a squirting flower - the…

Climate change is permanent change in climatic conditions of a region generally associated with altered rainfall, agricultural pattern, temperature conditions, droughts, floods, snow or high heat or low heat levels. In general it is assumed that green house gas emission is causing climate change. It needs a big study and big organizations are busy with big money to deal with such situations. However to a botanist climate is regulated by plants and any climate change must involve the plants to restore the same. Results of a survey in Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy titled "How Much Is Enough? Examining the Public’s Beliefs About Consumption" showed no huge surprise, people think we should consume less, but how the authors interpret the results is. Over 74 percent of respondents “support reducing consumption and believe doing so would improve societal and individual well-being”  but only 38 percent support  a luxury tax on houses bigger than 2,500 square feet or costing more than $300,000.  To authors Ezra Markowitz and Tom Bowerman this is something of a disconnect between…

Three main interpretations have arisen regarding the recent mass wildlife deaths throughout the world. The first set of reasons given as to why these mass animal and fish deaths are occurring is unique to each event: cows and birds were poisoned, fireworks provoked flight of birds causing them to crash into walls and die, and so on. There is a unique reason forwarded for each singular event. The second set of reasons are more conspiratorial and cite such possibilities as the massive wildlife deaths resulting from the unnerving chemtrails that have been widely reported throughout certain…
