Scientists think they have found a way to prevent and possibly reverse the most debilitating symptoms of the rare, progressive childhood degenerative disease called ataxia-telangiectasia, or A-T disease, that leaves children with slurred speech, unable to walk, and in a wheelchair before they reach adolescence.
Neurological degeneration is not the only life-threatening effect associated with A-T disease. It occurs in an estimated 1 in 40,000 births and also causes the immune system to break down and leaves children extremely susceptible to cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma. There is no…

Trimethyl-Xanthine (spoken: Zanthine) is a bitter, white crystalline alkaloid. It is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it is naturally synthesized as a pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants. Having evolved for no other reason than to kill a wide variety of animals, it should not come as a surprise that some of its effects on our human bodies are less than desirable.
Trimethyl-Xanthine, chemical name 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione or 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione

Women take longer to give birth today than did women 50 years ago, according to an analysis of nearly 140,000 deliveries conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health which finds that women take longer to give birth today than did women 50 years ago, despite many technological advances in medicine. The researchers compared data on deliveries in the early 1960s to data gathered in the early 2000s. They found that the first stage of labor had increased by 2.6 hours for first-time mothers. For women who had previously given birth, this early stage of labor took two hours longer…

Herbal medicine is still the mainstay of about 75-80 per cent of the world population, mainly in the developing countries, for primary health care because of better cultural acceptability, better compatibility with human body and lesser side effects. However, the last few years have seen a major increase in their use in the developed world. In Germany and France, many herbs and herbal extracts are used as prescription drugs and their sales in the countries of European Union were around $ 6 billion in 1991 and may be over $20 billion now. In USA, herbal drugs are currently sold in health food…

Do you use sunscreen? If not, you aren't as crazy as those anti-science hippies who are trying to give their kids smallpox or starve poor nations, but you are not exactly up on the literature of the last 30 years either.
However, you may be no worse off, especially if you are a woman who might like to keep her uterus working. The uterus - that special place where a baby grows(1) when a woman gets pregnant - can sometimes have its tissue misplaced. That's called endometriosis and it is when the tissue that normally lines the uterus is instead growing somewhere else. It can…

There are over 400 different tribal and other ethnic groups in India. The tribals constitute about 7.5 per cent of Indian population (Gupta, 1970). Apart from the tribal groups, many other forest dwellers and rural people also possess unique knowledge about plants. Tree worship played an important role in the religious history of India. The plants form the oldest association with human dwelling and ancient Indian cultures flourished in the midst of dense forests. They are offered in worship to several deities and different species are associated with different Gods. Some important plants like…

There have been some studies written on a schema called "the sick role" which defines a person who is disabled in some way. This concept, developed by Talcott Parsons) posits that within our society, disability is a kind of "sanctioned deviance." The sick person is released from normal social obligations and is not blamed for their condition. In parallel to these “rights”, Parsons also found that society expected the “sick” person to fulfill two “obligations: they are expected to want to get well and to seek and are expected to cooperate with others who want them to…
