"Airplanes do not "fly"! They are held aloft through the divine intervention of heavenly angels!""I'll notify the Texas Board of Education at once!" I wonder whether such dark levity is the last refuge of an intelligence that has seen the future, and that future has no need of it. Has anybody seen the film Idiocracy? by Tom Tomorrow at Salon.com. Enjoy... if that's the right word.

You have to love a company that not only treats its employees well but can have fun and laugh at itself. (Hint, hint, Microsoft.) Today, Google changed their name to Topeka (see link for proper uses of Topeka in context), and removed all the vowels from the Gmail log-in page. Google also created a new application called Translate for Animals. "Have you ever felt stressed or lonely, and the only conversation you’ve had has been a one sided one with your cat or dog? Well now it could be possible for your pet to communicate back, with an app developed by Google that’s called "Translate for…

Toyota's sticky accelerators could be caused by a concerted attack by evil cosmic rays. Toyota has kept quiet about these malicious forces but this puff piece may have unmasked a sinister force that could be causing untold havoc throughout the planet. Cosmic rays are high energy protons that have been flung into space by a supernova. Upon hitting Earth they seem to focus their attention on Toyotas. But not, apparently, in random acts of sabotage but rather they seem to have a foot fixation and enjoy playing with their gas pedals. However, researchers claim that such events happen all the time…

One of CERN's liquid containment units - a coffee mug - is shown to leak profusely when an attempt is made to put it into commission. A hapless pair of PR gurus bought their mugs at CERN's gift shop and only discovered the faulty design once it was tested back home. Mercifully, CERN does not currently have an online shop so this isolated accident should not alarm the rest of the public.

Don't Say Cheese Following a thorough scientific assessment of the risks involved in an experiment in the effects of gravity on round cheeses, a 200 year long experiment has been brought to a premature close. Said a spokesmouthpiece for Tewkesbury Borough Council: "We did some sums on the back of an envelope and it looks like all those cheeses rolling down the hill are creating a local gravitational anomaly.  It's sucking in people from the other side of the world." The council claims that the following picture in their press release shows architectural distortions due to local…

Two songs and videos about science for children, written and performed by They Might Be Giants. The almost anthemic "Science is Real" and a stroll through the periodic table in "Meet the Elements". They Might Be Giants have been around a long time - since the early 1980s - and have found their niche in music for TV and especially for kids. If you go to YouTube you will find many more science songs with an edge. Hope your kids enjoy them!

This has nothing to do with science, unless you count sci-fi as science. But I loved it, which is reason enough for me to post it. "Using a ring to bind someone you covet into your dark and twisted world? Wow, just got the subtext there. Also, the apparently eager Beyoncé would've made one badass Nazgȗl." Ah, xkcd. You are a shining light on the grey clouds of morning. By the way, Big Bang Theory just aired an episode on Lord of the Rings. Catch highlights here.
