Out of the total land area of India, measuring 3,29 million ha. (mha), 150 m ha. is uncultivated and 90 mha. is categorized as wasteland. The broad subdivision of the wasteland 1S categorized as saline and alkaline, wind and water eroded land forming considerable part of wasteland. 1.2 The process of regeneration of vegetation in degraded and denuded land, representing virtual sand dunes providing an insight into regeneration pattern and biodiversity of the region. 1.3 Complete vegetation pattern of Rajasthan has been studied (1, 2, 3, 4) and succession using hydrocarbon yielding plants has…

Bio-diesel production First efforts to cultivate hydrocarbon producing plants for fuel production were made by Italians in Ethiopia and French in Morocco. Later on Calvin and his collaborators have revived the idea again and have advocated the study of petro-crops as a possible feedstock for petroleum like materials. Presently the largest fuel programme is in Brazil where government currently spends a considerable amount on subsidizing the production of alcohol, mostly from biomass of sugarcane. Production was estimated to increase so muich that around 11 to 14 million cars will use alcohol…

Reducing green house gas emissions is one thing and checking rivers from drying , ponds , lakes , dams , going without water, flora and fauna being lost each year, more and more land turning saline and alkaline globally, loss of plant and animal species and degraded and denuded forests, depleting biomass as cooking fuel due to excessive use need a proper planning. Merely replacing fossil fuel with biofuel will not solve the problem which has to be tackled in totality. The Ramgarh lake has dried in Jaipur, the water pond of Amber is drying, water supply to jaipur is coming from a dam 150 km…

Scientists from MIT say they are developing a new kind of power plant that can generate electricity without emitting any carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and can be built at prices comparable to conventional natural-gas plants, and even to coal-burning plants. The catch, unfortunately, is that they need the government to inflate the price of coal through a cap and trade scheme or some other carbon tax to make the new power plant a viable alternative. According to the researchers' recently published Journal of Energy Sources article, the system would use solid-oxide fuel cells, which…

Influence of growth regulators on flowering and Fruiting in in    JATROPHA CURCAS: a bio-diesel plant      A. KUMAR  Engery Plantation Demonstration project and Biotechnology Center. Bio-Technology Lab Department of Botany University of Rajasthan, Jaipur - 302 004 Email. msku31@yahoo.com     ABSTRACT: Jatropha curcas produces flower twice in a year but flowering in June July comes to fruiting in greater numbers as compared to winter flowering. The mature bunch of flowers contains around 90 percent male flowers while the remaining 10 percent flowers…

Combustion is a commercial technology with traditional fuels such as wood residues and MSW (incineration) and several successful applications can be identified worldwide. However, in order to increase the range of applications and thus the market for combustion technologies, new applications have to be developed for the more complex feedstocks such as straw, grasses, and mixtures of several different fuels. Grate systems are the preferred type of combustor due to their reliability and industrial experience especially for small to medium size applications (0.5 - 5 MWe). Fluidized bed…

Energy is a crucial and vital ingredient for the modern development of economic activities of our society. Biofuel is a locally-available source of energy that not only can provide energy to meet the increased energy demand derived from the economic development of developing countries, but also contributes to climate change mitigation and rural development. Forests and trees as well as agriculture activities provide 14% of the total world primary energy used. For developing countries, wood energy is of considerably greater importance than in industrialized countries -about 15% of their energy…

SOME POTENTIAL PLANTS FOR BIO-ENERGY ASHWANI KUMAR AND AMIT KOTIYA Bio-Technology Lab,Department of Botany University of Rajasthan, Jaipur - 302 004 Energy Plantation Demonstration project and Biotechnology Center. Email. msku31@yahoo.com ABSTRACT: The state of Rajasthan is situated between 23°3’N and 30°12’ N latitude and 69°30’ and 78°17’ E longitude. The total land area of the state is about 3,42,239 km2, out of which about 1,96,150 km2 is arid and rest is semi-arid. This arid and semi-arid wasteland is rich in biodiversity. During present investigation studies were conducted on…

Plant growth is a sum total of anabolic and catabolic reactions with addition of dry matter. The plant growth is regulated by several intrinsic and extrinsic factors. There are several other factors promoting growth and productivity of food crops, fibres and oil yielding plants (Kumar et al., 1995 and Kumar and Roy, 1996). The plants used in ayurvedic drugs were mostly collected from the field conditions and this has resulted in considerable loss of biodiversity and endangering several plant species. Conservation of these valuable plant species has become imperative (Dhar et al., 2000) due to…
