Cancer patients can survive longer under treatments based on their individual genetic profiles, according to a nationwide study released jointly today by Phoenix-area healthcare organizations.  The study says that molecular profiling of patients can identify specific treatments for individuals, helping keep their cancer in check for significantly longer periods, and in some cases even shrinking tumors. Study results were released today at the 100th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Denver by Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, Physician-In-Chief of the Phoenix-based…

This next in my series on Brain donation is of necessity going to seem partisan as the principal objection to this particular programme cannot help but be critical of the organization that is sponsoring it since the objection in part has to do with the climate of public opinion surrounding autism that has been created by organizations such as autism speaks. I cannot deal with the middle of my three strands of objection - "The ethical implications for the target population in terms of the repercussions in that community" without considering that climate. To recap the history of autism briefly…

This short post is my first contribution to ScientificBlogging: with it I am relocating my blog here from wordpress. I am thrilled by the opportunity to join a larger group of excellent science writers, and possibly reach a larger audience interested in particle physics and in my other occasional discussions of chess, politics, astronomy, astrophysics, or the personal notes I sometimes choose  to dump here.It was with relief that last evening I finally received a confirmation of my talk from the organizers of the 2009 World Conference on Science Journalists, an event which will take…

India is a huge country. It has the richest cultural diversity, at the same time its economic diversity is also staggering. There are extremely rich people and also appalling poorer people. This imbalance is being reflected in all fields, but more in our education system. At one hand, we have the world class school, colleges and Institutes, on other hand we have enormously large number of school and colleges without the basic infra structures.   The interest towards science has to be created at very young age. That  interest should be nurtured properly. The proper facility and…

After participating in The Depravity Scale survey (see part 1 of this post for more on the scale and The Rock of Love Bus), I brainstormed with my fellow survey taker for more uses for the depravity scale. We came up with quite a few - some publishable, some not. Perhaps it's fitting that I'm writing this while watching Rachel Maddow, who is talking about, and I quote, tea-bagging politicians and former Gov. Blagojevich. No sense of irony there. (In a related note, Blago is asking a federal judge to allow him to travel, if his bond was increased, to Costa Rica to participate in NBC's new…

Over the past few weeks, more spam has been slipping through to my Gmail inbox. Consider: The oddly named Jule Cuc enthusiastically offers college Dip1omas [sic]: “At your own pace! No examination! No study! No classes!” Kieth l. Black is cautiously optimistic with his pitch: “Please your spouse more often than not,” while Marianne Daniels is mysteriously quaint: “Uplift your darling couch adventures”. Ironically, Bishop appears to be selling Viagra, though his email contains an esoteric reference to the diary of Samuel Pepys, in which he suggests that “meer sauce, or a pickle” are reasonable…

The benefits of physical activity and a balanced diet are well documented and form the basis of many public health recommendations; this is because each of these factors can independently influence risks for many chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Some research also suggests that exercise and diet interact to influence health. For instance, exercising after short-term fasting (such as before breakfast) may increase the amount of fat burned. Similarly, consumption of a meal eliciting a low blood glucose response prior to exercise may also boost the use…

One year is passed after Wheelr poneer in Physics and Astronomy said good by to this motral world and went to a unknown teriotory. How sad it is for loosing a gem of a person. It was on April 13, 2008, the news paper very qietly said  John Archibald Wheeler, a legend in physics who coined the term "black hole" and whose immense contributions to  the field of Physics,  succumbed to pneumonia. During his  productive scientific life, he was well known for working in frontier areas. " Wheeler used to probe far beyond the human knowledge, asking questions…

Happy Birthday to you, the sweeties who don't even eat cake! I am honoring here three sweet ones. One that just turned one today. OK I don't even know her but she must be sweet like all baby girls. The other is Barbie who is 50 this year. She surely does not eat cake. She allegedly keeps her figure by not eating. Then I celebrate the oldest woman still living on this planet. Sakhan Dosova - - a Kazakh - - was born on March 27, 1879, according to the Daily Mail. She has said to have never eaten sweets. Does her definition of sweets include baklava? Does she like pistachios?…
