A few years ago, a show premiered called "Doomsday Preppers." I was fascinated by it because just in my lifetime I can't recall how many Apocalyptic events have come and gone,(1) starting of course with the darling of the environmental movement, Professor Paul Ehrlich ("Population Bomb"), and then a decade later with President Obama's Science Czar Dr. John Holdren and his mandatory abortions and world government ("Ecoscience"), and in between every year or so Natural Resources Defense Council would claim some pesticide on apples was killing us, or mercury in fish or...well, you get the idea.
Surely people who believed in these Doomsday Prophets have to be jaded by now. Instead, there are pockets of people all across who are spending time and money preparing for a cultural eschaton - even if it they think it will come in different flavors. They're called environmentalists.
Environmental activists have always been Doomsday Preppers, but unlike the kind on the television show, they have probably never shot a gun. And that means to other Doomsday Preppers environmental activists are just part of The Plan.
When The Apocalypse Comes, Will Vegetarians Be The First Ones Cannibalized?
To Doomsday Preppers, the word 'vegetarian' connotes 'pacificist' and that is why Jake Cassar, who runs a youth program for teenage boys on the New South Wales Central Coast to pass on survivalist skills, says vegetarians and urban environmentalists would probably be used for meat by actual environmental survivalists.
What they do share in common is a fixation on bees. Activists have been hoping for an actual decline in honeybees, and since that has not happened they keep moving to new species. Mostly recently they begun to say that wild bees are probably dying off and we just don't know it. This is impossible to disprove so a far more welcome environmental than trying to show Colony Collapse Disorder in honey bees when numbers haven't moved. Since environmentalists share a lot of common traits - a disproportionate denial of science related to agriculture, vaccines and energy, plus a willingness to be vegetarian.

NOTES:
(1) The show itself was rather weak; a family or group would be profiled and at the end an unseen panel of suspect qualification would tell them how unprepared they are - but, of course, that is the gimmick. Preppers want to be told how unprepared they are in the same way that Greg Glassman of Crossfit can make money telling people they need even more important while he swills Pepsi - and they are grateful for his input. Or activists want to be told the world is doomed unless they send money to pay the mortgage on fancy Sierra Club real estate.
