The following statements are based on the personal experience of WSTEWART: 1) People who exercise aerobically every day or two are less susceptible to respiratory and other infections. 2) Lack of regular aerobic exercise during an infection lengthens recovery time. 3) The fastest recovery from an infection occurs when one reduces stress by returning to bed immediately after finishing ones regular aerobic exercise regimen. 4) Recovery takes longer if one tries to increase one's fitness level by training harder before complete recovery. Scientists know that Salmonella and E. coli O157, a strain of E. coli that can cause serious sickness in humans, can spread to salads and vegetables if they are fertilized with contaminated manure, irrigated with contaminated water, or if they come into contact with contaminated products during cutting, washing, packing and preparation processes. However, until now, scientists did not understand how the pathogens managed to bind to the leaves. In new research presented today at the 21st International ICFMH Symposium 'Food Micro 2008' conference in Aberdeen, a new study shows how some…

If you use Q-Tips to clean your ears, you may want to read this. And if you use a water pick to clean your ears, you may want to read this too (yes, some people actually use a dental water pick to clean their ears). The guidelines, which will appear as a supplement to the September 2008 issue of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, are the first comprehensive clinical guidelines to help health care practitioners identify patients with cerumen impaction. Who knew earwax could be so interesting? But it's still gross. Cerumen, commonly called "earwax," is not really a "wax" but a water-…

Codeine is commonly used for pain relief and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics as being compatible with breastfeeding. Following numerous reports through the Motherisk counseling service and the tragic death of an infant who died from an overdose of morphine acquired from breast milk, Dr. Gideon Koren and his team, located at SickKids and The University of Western Ontario, investigated these negative reactions. Codeine is a 'prodrug' which means that on its own it is relatively inactive. The pain relieving attributes are only activated when it is metabolized, or transformed…
