In Hindu mythology when a man dies and his funeral pyre has to be lit the fire must be provided by son only and not the daughter so that the man gets moksha or salvation . This is common belief of most people and if they don’t have son they won’t get moksha or salvation. This has no meaning now and in many cases it is the progressive girls who are performing this last rite. However till recent past this has been the cause of population growth as the couples go on producing children till they get male child. Some time it is 3rd or 4th or 5th or even 6th or 7th child. In some tribes and…

India with its population is growing. Its economy too is growing . However increasing population is a problem and almost all the development is consumed in feeding hungry children I am quoting from Hindustan Times with full reference below: “Hunger persists despite spectacular economic expansion, and it is disproportionate to rising incomes. With per capita income crossing $1,000, India is now considered a middle-income country.” “India’s latest hunger ranking, delivered by the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington D.C., did not make it to television news. In the…

A new study suggests watermelon can be an effective natural weapon against prehypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease.   It still won't hurt to exercise, of course. Estimates are that up to 60 percent of U.S. adults are prehypertensive or hypertensive. Prehypertension is characterized by systolic blood pressure readings of 120-139 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) over diastolic pressure of 80-89 mm Hg. "Systolic" refers to the blood pressure when the heart is contracting. "Diastolic" reflects the blood pressure when the heart is in a period of relaxation and expansion. The…

There is a common song these days speak slowly or else father will be awake. I have not seen the film. Its common story of societies struggling to be called modern , they imitate all dresses of the western society including half pants but on the other hand having hands full of round bangles. In a culture of having boy friends but should father not know them so they are to be kept under the cover or a girl has to cover her face in cloth all the time lest her future husband to be might not see them in a company of a boy. After they belong to great culture which is to be preserved. West is not…

Will Los Angeles go the way of Paris?  The City of Angels can learn a lot about public health from the capital of croissants. Not long ago, I came across a book about the trials and tribulations of a giant city. This city was reeling from a seemingly endless migration of rural peoples from its south. Its traditional family structure was strained - papa and mama both had to work. Most of them had to live in housing close to sources of polluted air. Infectious disease was rampant but largely untreated. Most had  known hunger in their lifetimes. Their mothers likely experienced some…

If you want something done right, do it yourself. Or, if you're tired of waiting for someone else to do it, give it the ol' college try yourself. So saith two local governments, anyway. Two unrelated stories caught my eye, and I thought them interesting enough to share. I'm willing to bet you have examples of such local action in your region. The first deals with my hometown (and current place of residence), the charming Hennepin County in Minnesota. The second comes from that bastion of fun and civilization among Iowa's corn- and soybean fields, Iowa City (where I lived for a lovely summer…

I am on a diet, to the delight of my impossibly chic wife, who has no problem at all eating cake and pasta in front of me while I consume bland chicken. I had assumed that my increasing weight was due to eating too much and no exercise but a new Université de Montréal study says it is my job doing it to me.  Whew.  I dodged a bullet there. Regardless, in two weeks I will be back where I want and if it is true that workplace related obesity is real, my job took four years to make me a weight I did not want so four weeks is not so bad to suffer. But is there anything to a…

The fake orgasm scene in "When Harry Met Sally" is likely the only good thing about that movie, and that's because it resonated with nearly everyone.    To men, it seemed real, and women knew they could do a better job - and likely had.  Recently, according to new data. An Indiana University survey on sexual behavior covering a startling range (ages 14 to 94 - not sure which is creepier) said 85% of men believed their partners climaxed during the most recent sex act but only 64% of women affirmed that. The survey was sponsored by Trojan condoms so the idea is they can…
