Lisa Jackson is leaving the EPA, she has announced, and virtually no one is going to be disappointed. The EPA was created to be anti-business so no one can really claim that being anti-business is a surprise or even a problem. The organization was created by President Richard Nixon, a legend among social authoritarians for his abuse of government authority and his efforts to allow government to control everything possible, but among Presidents he is one of the most important environmental advocates ever.
Because it was needed. It is silly and unrealistic to think lots of small organizations competing with each other are going to proactively be environmental stewards as well, so some reasonable limits have to be placed from outside. In that sense, it is okay for the EPA to be anti-business, it is often the only way to be pro-environment. What they can't be is anti-science.
And the EPA under Lisa Jackson was the most anti-science in its four decade history.
Some disagree, of course. It's not anti-science if you happen to agree with their goals, in the minds of activists. But it simply needs to be flipped inside out for people to understand how it is a mistake to blame health problems on fracking, for example, by noting that we shouldn't unilaterally blame health problems on organic food without any evidence.
And while there has always been a conflict between some aspects of science and some aspects of policy
She was at the helm of a Congressional end-run to mandate laws by claiming emissions were the domain of the EPA, for example, and unelected officials ramming through policies is not a great idea.
