Radiation !
The word brings sudden silence and a feel of insecurity. The effect of  nuclear radiation brings the memory of  Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Everyone wishes  to escape from radiation. But can we escape? Really none can. It is here and everywhere.

In fact, we are in the sea of radiation. Radiation pervades.  

The earth on which we stand is full of radioactive elements. The earth constantly radiating. We also radioactive due to K-40. Air we breathe, the water we drink , the food we eat are all naturally radioactive.

As you aware, the Earth is bombarded with particles and other radiation. These radiation are called Cosmic Radiation, since their origin is really cosmic! We the living beings are constantly exposed to some or other form of  ionizing radiation constantly - day and night. But we are safe, since we have accustomed for it. It is in the radiation we born and to die!

The intensity of  Cosmic Radiation varies from place to place - minimum at equator and relatively higher at polar region. Also its intensity is less on surface and increases at higher altitude. Explanation  requires bit more Physics!

The radiation due to   radioisotopes exist on earth’s surface and interior  produce exposure of larger extent. Also it varies from place to place. It is not constant. At some places - for example in Brazil, eastern and western coast of India, due to monazite sand - containing Thorium in large quantities radiation intensity found to be several magnitude higher. This aspect makes the study of natural radiation in the environment is interesting one.

The different materials which we use for the construction of our houses are also radioactive. The granite and marble stones not only costlier but also radioactive.  The uranium and thorium, their daughter products - radon and thorn produce a large amount of radiation exposure. We have to consider these aspects in construction of sweet homes!

We use X-rays, Gamma rays , UV rays, IR rays in the medical field. Off course, they have brought a revolution in the medical field. These different sources also responsible for higher radiation dose.

We are in the sea of natural radiation. To the  naturally prevailing one, we should not add by our deeds - that may be by weapon tests, reactors and by other means.
