I have written a great deal about global warming, climate change and have made several successful predictions - notably the recent calving of an ice island at the outlet of the Petermann Glacier's floating ice tongue.  As the first person to publicly report that event and as the only person - to the best of my knowledge - to predict it's scale I feel entitled to be given due credit as a person who may know a thing or two about science.

It is exactly because this is a science site that I want you to agree not to believe a word I say based solely on my reputation.

Science demands independent verification.  If I post up a graph, don't believe me when I tell you where it came from - follow the link.

Ambiguity

Ah!  The power of language!  The ambiguity!

All languages have inherent ambiguities, but the English Language has an over-abundance of ways in which to be ambiguous.

Ambiguity is avoided as far as is humanly possible by the scientist and the lawyer - but it is embraced whole-heartedly by the agendist and the propagandist.

Never forget that to a linguist, the term 'language' includes all forms of human communication.  For example, a simple logo or name can communicate an aura of trust.  For some, like LLoyd's of London, the maintenance of a reputation for ethics is of paramount importance to maintaining trust in the image.

For the propagandist, the intention is that a word, phrase or symbol associated with trust within the target audience should be used to endorse the message.

And there you have the key to unlocking the so-called 'debate' about global warming and climate change.  The phrasing of scientists is as neutral as they, being human, can make it.  On the other side of the 'debate' stand the Anti-Science Propagandists, or ASPs.

No self-respecting scientist would think to 'improve' a document, graph or image by 'endorsing it with a personal logo.  Institutes often use logos as a quick way to show the source when the document or image is reproduced.  Logos are protected by law and it is at least a civil offence, and may be a criminal offence, to create a logo so similar to an existing one that any ordinary person would not know the difference.

For example, as I have mentioned before, it is an offence to copy the logo of the House of Commons and House of Lords.  Use of the genuine logo is restricted.  When a person who is not now and never has been a member of the honorable House of Lords uses a similar logo and pretends to be a member of the House of Lords, that person commits an offence against the laws of the U.K. and commits the offence of contempt of Parliament.  Despite many other such false claims and positively Muchausian attitudes to truth, I doubt that the McNaughten rules would apply.

The simple fact that humans have been changing the face of this planet unintentionally has been known since antiquity.
