Energy from the sun and carbon dioxide fuel photosynthesis in plants and algae, making life on earth possible. Carbon that is fixed by plants is converted to starch and sucrose, which are utilized by plants for energy and to build biomass. Human evolution and society have been intimately tied to our exploitation of plant biomass for food, fuel, tools, and shelter. However, to be usable, the starch carbohydrate stored in plants must be broken down to component sugars. Some aspects of starch metabolism have been known for many years, but regulation of the process and exact physical mechanisms…

Want to put your computer to good use while you sleep? Muhammad Zaman, assistant professor in biomedical engineering, recently introduced Cellular Environment in Living Systems @Home or CELS@Home for short. The program already has more than 1,000 computer users worldwide contributing to the project and the numbers are growing. The idea is based on grid computing so instead of using local computing resources, which are almost always limited, Internet users worldwide can contribute their idle computer time, creating a "virtual" supercomputer to solve a difficult problem. In this case, the grid…

One of my pet peeves is the common description in the media of bacteria "learning" to "outsmart" antibiotics. As anyone with a basic comprehension of evolution knows, learning has nothing to do with it. Learning is what happens during the lifetime of an individual, and it occurs in direct response to some information that the individual encounters. When bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, it is not by learning. The individual bacteria do not sense the antibiotic and change to become resistant. Rather, individual bacteria in a population that happen to be resistant because of some…
