A quick tour of 5 mind-blowing scientific theories

Don't think you have time for science? Cracked.com ("America's Only Humor & Video Site, since 1958" - we've got humor and video here at Scientific Blogging, but we haven't been around since 1958), has a quick summary of 5 scientific theories that will make your head explode.

One of those theories is evolution:

We’re all familiar with the basics of evolution: that a munificent monkey-goddess birthed us all from Her banana-scented womb. But there are some lesser-discussed implications of natural selection that are just plain weird...

Among the implications of evolution is that "you can rest assured than anyone you ever have sex with in your entire life is at least your distant, distant cousin."

There's not much more I can add to that. Go check out the other 4 theories at Cracked.

It's been an insane week of failed late-night laboratory experiments and other goings on, and the half-finished blogging has been piling up, but stay tuned for data mining in biology and terrorism, how not to get suckered in the creation-evolution controversy, a review of Ken Miller's defense of evolution in Only A Theory, and the next installment in my discussion of The Plausibility of Life - what are the core conserved processes of the cell, when and how did they evolve, and why do we get so much evolutionary change when these core processes change so little?
