“GM food only way to feed starving people: US scientist

“Kochi, Feb 28 (PTI) The ''spat'' over GM vegetables on ethical grounds was meaningless while millions of people are starving in the world, renowned biomaterial scientist of the US Prof Buddy D Ratner said today. Speaking to reporters here, Prof Ratner, Director, University of Washington, Engineered Biomaterials, said the only way ahead to feed these people was available food varieties and supplements brought out through Research and Development in biotechnology.
Earlier, in his keynote address at the "International Conference on Biomaterials, Artificial Organs and Tissue Engineering," he claimed his institute has developed a new technology by which biomaterials can independently grow as stem cells in the body”.
The conference was organised by SCMS Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research and Development.”
We started with 4 billion people not so long ago and soon shall be reaching the mark of 8 billion people around the globe. The globe is limited in water, soil and environment. Biotechnology can provides many solutions but problems like salinity, drought , insects and pests requiring immediate attention from the sides of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics and bioinformatics are not easy and simple. It needs perfect understanding and working together on many diverse areas and genes. One should not have false hopes from biotechnology that it can solve the worlds food problems but biotechnology is the only way to do so.
