There's A Reason Cats Go Blind On A Vegetarian Diet

Are you smarter than a cat?

Not if you are a vegetarian. Cats know what is good for them and that is why cats are basically carnivores.  Cats can't produce taurine,  2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, which is vital for eyesight. Good luck getting taurine from a vegetarian diet. But mice and other critters?  Absolutely.

Because being a vegetarian is unnatural, people in Norway are prohibited from putting their dogs or cats on vegetarian diets under the country’s Animal Welfare Act. That's right, Norwegians won't let you do to pets what PETA wants to do to all Americans.

“Cats are finicky, and they generally dislike vegetarian food," says Bjarne Braastad, professor of ethology (the study of animal behavior) at the Norwegian University of Live Sciences (UMB). “Vegetables have no nutrition that cats need."

That's not to say cats are purrfect.  They have long been linked to mental illness and suicide in women, though it's the same sort of correlation-causation arrow goofiness that leads cultural mullahs to ban Happy Meals in order to cure obesity, so take it with a grain of salt.

In fairness, the craziness may be due to kitty litter and not the cats themselves, though this crazy photo of Diamond Eye Thai cats doesn't help their reputation.  A study found that women infected with  Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) parasite, which is spread through contact with cat faeces or eating undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables, are at increased risk of attempting suicide - one and a half times more likely to attempt suicide compared to those who were not infected, and the risk seemed to rise with increasing levels of the T. gondii antibodies.
