Did you know that “nearly three-quarters of adult lesbians overweight or obese,” and that gay males are not? I confess I didn't, though it may be because, outside a relative, I am not sure I know any lesbian women, due to my "I don't give a crap" policy which causes me to forget to assume two women together are lesbians and wonder what it has to do with their waistlines.
But the National Institutes of Health knows - and they want to know why. So far, they have spent nearly $3 million on a project to figure it out, just over $670,000 this year. S. Bryn Austin, epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and colleagues wrote last year that gay and bisexual males had a “greater desire for toned muscles” than straight men, which explained their lower obesity, while lesbians have lower “athletic-self esteem” - so much for the belief that all lesbians spend their weekends playing field hockey - and are more likely to see themselves at a healthy weight, even though they are not.
How dare those lesbians sit around being supportive of each other and seeing beyond the cosmetic and telling their partners they are beautiful when they clearly are obese?? Don't fall into that trap, heterosexuals.
Writing at Washington Free Beacon, Elizabeth Harrington goes into more published paper details, mostly to foment taxpayer outrage. To me, $3 million is a drop in the Hoover Dam when it comes to wasted money on social sciences, but if you read the claims of the epidemiologists and the papers they have written, you will instead have science outrage that epidemiology has run itself over the cliff into sociology.
